.Occurs in elderly ,etiology is unkwn,may b due to vascular compression at root entry zone of 5th nerve.

.Paroxymal,sharp pain ,confined to distibution of nerve.Maxillary nd mandibular division commonly affected
.Pain is ppted by touching triggeq zones eg cold wind blowing on face,washing fabe ,chewing or talking
.No abnormalities of 5th nerve functn seen on physical examinatn
.Pain of trigeminal neuraglia differ frm pain following reactivatn of varicella zoster virus
.Similar type of pain occur in
multiple sclerosis ,basilar aneurysm ,cerebral tumour
.TREATMENT=
.Carbamazepine start with 100-200 mg/day,increase in 2-3 wks to 200-400 mg tid
.Phenytoin 100 mg tid
.Clonazepam 1-2 mg tid
.Localised pain managed with injectn of phenol or alcohol
